I support HB 1393 to strengthen early literacy policy in Colorado!
The Reading to Ensure Academic Development (READ) Act, Colorado’s early literacy policy, was passed in 2012 to help identify children in K-3rd grade who are falling behind in reading and provide funding to support getting those students caught up.
While the READ Act is strong policy, HB 1393 would strengthen and improve it by:
- Emphasizing teacher supports and professional development.
- Establishing a process for improving READ plans, which guide the individual interventions for students who are furthest behind in literacy skills.
- Adding additional transparency for how READ Act per pupil intervention funding is spent (currently, $33 million).
- And, allowing for funds to be added to the Early Literacy Grant program, which has shown great success in improving literacy rates.
HB 1393 will strengthen the READ Act and support educators who are teaching students how to read. I am asking you to support HB 1393.
