- The Shelby County Board of Education and Superintendent develop a comprehensive equitable facilities plan.
- The Shelby County Mayor and Board of Commissioners provide the resources needed to create the best learning environments for ALL students
All students need facilities and classrooms that meet 21st century standards. Yet, historically and currently, Shelby County has had deep disparities in the quality of facilities students attend. Almost 80% of SCS schools are at least 40 years old, many still with original equipment.
Nearly $500 million of deferred maintenance exists in current SCS school buildings. Students are trying to learn, and educators teach, in buildings with leaky roofs, outdated heating and air conditioning, faulty plumbing, and other major facility issues. This too often results in students becoming ill, or schools being closed for months, drastically decreasing student attendance and achievement.
To help remedy these inequities and advocate for the resources our schools need, sign and share this petition.
